Research seminar by Tymofii Brik “Influence of the state on religious diversity and religious freedom in Ukraine after EuroMaidan”.
This policy research employs novel data on religious communities registered in Ukraine after Euromaidan.
The data include information about registrations as well as rejections of religious communities. These data show spatial patterns of Orthodox competition at the regional level. The dataset also shows to what extent religious communities that migrated from Crimea and Donbass influence local religious markets. There is evidence that the number of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Kyivan Patriarchate increased after Euromaidan.
At the same the number of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Moscow Patriarchate remained stable. There is tentative evidence of the state favoritism towards the UOC-KP. The gap that had existed between two rivalry Orthodox jurisdictions has narrowed.
