On October 22 Kyiv School of Economics is honored to host Edward W. Walker with an open lecture “What to expect from US policy toward Ukraine and Russia for the remaining years of the Obama presidency”.

Dr.Walker’s research has focused on communist systems and post-communist politics, nationalism, ethno-politics and ethnic conflict in the former Soviet Union; problems of federalism, secession, and nationalism; religion and the state; frozen conflicts in post-Soviet space, political Islam movements in the Soviet successor states, and geopolitics in Eurasia.

 

 

 

About the speaker:

Edward W. Walker is Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science and Executive Director of the Berkeley Program in Eurasian and East European Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. His book Dissolution: Sovereignty and the Breakup of the Soviet Union (Rowman & Littlefield, 2003), explains the breakup of the Soviet Union into fifteen successor states, emphasizing the role of the institutions and the mythologies of Soviet federalism and nationality policy.

In the course of his career, Walker worked with every Israeli Prime Minister since Golda Meir, with Presidents Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, with Presidents Hafez al-Assad and Bashar al-Assad of Syria, with King Fahd and Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, and with Kings Hussein and Abdullah of Jordon, among others. During his time as Ambassador to Israel, Walker worked closely with Prime Minister Netanyahu in preparation for and during the Wye negotiations. He started the negotiations with Libya which led to Libya’s decision to abandon its weapons of mass destruction programs.

In Egypt he worked with Vice President Al Gore and President Hosni Mubarak on a major initiative to reform the Egyptian economy. Walker also worked with US and Egyptian intelligence officials to counter the terrorist threat facing that country.
