KSE Academic Director Denys Nizalov will give a presentation  on “Land reform, farm productivity, investment incentives, and evolution of the agrarian structure” at the World Bank, DC, on December 13, 2012.

Abstract. Given its immense agro-ecologial potential, Ukraine has long been viewed as a key player to ensure future production and food security. Policy interventions that are often seen as ad hoc and sometimes as misuguided have, however, often precluded full utilization of this potential.

The presentation will use micro-data to address three issues. First, it will review recent trends in agricultural sector performance and productivity by farm size class. Second, it will explore the extent to which insecure property rights are an obstacle to long-term investment and optimimum performance. Finally, it will draw out implications for the evolution of Ukraine’s farm sector in the longer term.
