Texas Tribune Experience. How local media can compete with digital giants

On August 29, 2019, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm, The Texas Tribune American journalists Ayan Mittra and Julián Aguilar will meet with graduates of the Center for Excellence in Economic Journalism at Kyiv School of Economics and other interested in media sphere participants.

 

Event is free subject to pre-registration, a translation will be provided. The meeting will be held due to support by Ukraine Media Partnership Program from IREX.

 

The Texas Tribune is a non-profit, non-partisan media organization focused on public policy, government and nationwide issues in Texas, USA. A local publication that successfully competes with digital giants and national editions. The 2018 edition’s budget is about $ 60 million, a quarter provided by individual donations.

 

Ayan Mittra – Editor of The Texas Tribune. For the first seven years, Ayan worked as a technical editor. In 2008, he moved to a political office to manage daily presentations and work with journalists in the fields. He has experience as a night news editor. Was in the editorial group of the legislative sessions of 2009 and 2011. For seven years, the Ayana organization has won the Peabody Award, numerous online news association awards, and the Edward R. Merrow Award. Earlier, Iyan worked for 11 years at The Dallas Morning News. Born in Beaumont, he received a degree in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Julian Aguilar reports on political issues and events on the Texas-Mexico border. He focuses on immigration reform and enforcement, voter identification, international trade, border security and drug trafficking. He covered local, legislative, and congressional races in Texas, as well as local and national elections in Mexico. Prior to the Tribune, he worked as a freelancer at Fort Worth Weekly, did government and crime reporting for the Laredo Morning Times, and was a political correspondent for the Rio Grande Guardian. Born in El Paso, he earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas and a master’s degree in journalism from the Frank W. Mayborn Institute of Journalism at the University of North Texas.
