Business English Course

Description

Business English Course is process-based and result-oriented, it aims at developing competences and practical skills in BF students necessary for successful oral and written communication in business. It has been developed using the materials of the Financial Times, The Economist and other leading sources of business information, reflecting the latest trends in the business world.

After course completion, you will be able to

  • Understand a wide range of business texts, recognise implicit meaning; express yourself fluently and spontaneously with clear articulation of your ideas / opinions / judgements;
  • Use business English flexibly and effectively for business purposes; produce clear well-structured detailed texts (business correspondence) and speeches / presentations on business-related subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.

Course outline

Session 1. Marketing.

Basic marketing terms. The product life cycle. Distribution channels.

Listening/Case study: The most effective forms of promotion.

Writing: describing different distribution channels used for different products.

 

Session 2. Advertising.

Advertising and viral marketing: advantages/disadvantages.

Listening/Discussion: Successful advertising.

Writing: advantages of viral marketing.

 

Session 3. Banking.

Banks and financial institutions. Commercial banking. The subprime crisis and the credit crunch.

Listening/Role play: Microfinance.

Writing: an e-mail reasoning your opinion on the subject.

 

Session 4. Venture capital.

Managing new businesses. Successes and failures. A business plan.

Listening/Discussion: Investing in start-ups.

Writing: Summary on your group investment decision.

 

Session 5. Bonds.

Different ways governments can raise money. How to profit from bonds.

Listening/Case study: Investing in funds. Bonds and subprime mortgages.

Writing: report on justifying your choice of investments.

 

Session 6. Stocks and shares.

Different possible investments. Hedge funds.

Listening: Business news.

Case study/role play: investing client’s money; asset management.

 

Session 7. Derivatives.

Spread-betting. Pain barriers. Correct timing. Risk reduction.

Listening: Hedge funds and structured products.

Role play: Financial instruments.

Writing: information leaflet for bank consumers.
