Biography
Brigadier General Kevin Ryan (U.S. Army retired) is a visiting professor at Kyiv School of Economics specializing in national security studies.
Ryan is a career U.S. military officer who served in air and missile defense, intelligence, and political-military policy areas. After military service, he was a Senior Fellow and Executive Director for Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. He was also Vice President for Business Development at iRobot Corporation.
As an Army air defense officer, Ryan commanded up to brigade level, serving in the U.S., Germany, South Korea, and Iraq. As an Army foreign area officer, he was focused on the Soviet Union and later Russia. He served in Russia, East and West Germany, and in policy-making assignments at the Pentagon. He taught Russian language at the U.S. Military Academy.
At Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Ryan was the founding director of the center’s U.S.-Russia Initiative to Prevent Nuclear Terrorism, where he also founded the “Elbe Group” (retired American and Russian flag officers from the military and intelligence fields). He was Executive Director for Research at the Belfer Center from 2010 to 2013. Ryan continued to be a fellow at Belfer until 2023.
Ryan holds a Master’s Degree in National Security Strategy from the National War College, a Master’s Degree in Russian Language and Literature from Syracuse University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree from the U.S. Military Academy. He is the author of over 20 articles and book chapters on various leadership and security topics.
