Policy seminar «The future of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the North Stream 2: analysis of scenarios»

Description

At the policy seminar by Dmytro Naumenko, Senior research fellow at the The Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting (IER) in Kyiv, we will discuss options for Ukraine behaviour after the finishing of the North Stream-2 project.

Due to changes in the geopolitical orientation of Ukraine in favor of integration with the European Union, the transit of Russian gas to the EU became a hostage of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine starting from 2014. Russia has made a strategic decision to reduce transit of gas through Ukrainian main pipelines by developing and commissioning new alternative gas pipelines that go around North and South of Ukraine. Nevertheless, the transit route of Ukraine still keeps its role as the largest (in terms of volume) route of delivery of Russian gas to European consumers, but its share is becoming more uncertain after the termination of the contract on the transit of Russian gas between Naftogaz of Ukraine and PJSC “Gazprom” at the end of 2018.

Analytical work “The future of transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the North Stream 2: analysis of scenarios” is a contribution to the current discussion in the EU on the future supply of Russian gas to the European gas market and the role of the Ukrainian transit corridor in the near future, presenting the main, most realistic , scenarios of the use of the Ukrainian gas transportation system, which are possible after the construction (or refusal of construction) of the main new alternative Russian gas pipelines – North Stream 2 and Turkish stream – and different levels of demand for Russian pipeline gas to the EU.
