- Global Commercial Aircraft Manufacturing: (Im)Possibilities of Catching-up
Description

Tomorrow, December 21, at the Kyiv School of Economics, Anna Belous will conduct a research seminar “Global Commercial Aircraft Manufacturing: (Im)Possibilities of Catching-up”.
The global competition in the market of aircraft is pressing. With aircraft manufacturing being the industry that contains bundles of technological advancements, it is at the very core of technological progress. This is why developing countries are trying to enter the industry either through catching-up or entering the global value chains. Trying to build a competitive high-tech industry, developing countries face multiple challenges.
Post-Soviet countries are no exception. To understand the problems and opportunities for employing targeted industrial policies, a process of convergence through technology transfer and innovation as well as modifications in terms of business strategies and planning, the study conducts a detailed analysis of the history of global and Soviet aircraft manufacturing, and its transformation since the fall of the USSR. Today, with around 80% of the market belonging to Boeing and Airbus, post-Soviet aircraft production is set to struggle to fit in the global markets and secure procurement sufficient for further development.
In this presentation, we will discuss the barriers to entry and recent structural transformations of the global aircraft manufacturing industry against which countries like Ukraine and Russia are trying to re-enter the market of commercial planes.
