Health Economics and Financing (Mathematical Economics and Econometrics program)
Description
Students in Economics often do not know how to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-life problems. This course offers one such application – health care reform in developing and transition countries. Using the Harvard School of Public Health approach, we will identify five key policy instruments (financing, organization, payment, regulation, and behavior) that have to be altered to achieve reform objectives.
This course introduces a practical and comprehensive framework for understanding health systems and their performance and offers a structured approach to improve that performance through health sector reforms. Health Economics and Financing is based on ”The Flagship Course on Health Systems Reforms and Sustainable Financing” developed by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health including Thomas Bossert (a Senior Lecturer in Global Health Policy and Director of International Health Systems Program), William Hsiao (K.T. Li Research Professor of Economics in Department of Health Policy and Management and Department of Global Health and Population) and Iryna Postolovska (a doctoral candidate in the Department of Global Health and Population). Specifically, the course will include lecture notes, case studies and other teaching materials developed by these global experts.
