Father of economic reforms in post-communist Poland Prof.Leszek Balcerowicz visited KSE!

On May 29, Kyiv School of Economics hosted prominent politician and economist, father of economic reforms in post-communist Poland Prof.Leszek Balcerowicz. Prof. Balcerowicz spoke on the recipes to kick-start economy in times of transition and led discussion with representatives of Ukraine’s business community and academics. Anna Derevyanko, Executive Director of European Business Association, Morgan Williams, President of U.S.-Ukraine Business Council, Irina Paliashvili, President of RULG-Ukrainian Legal Group, Dr. Anders Aslund, Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and Chairman of the International Advisory Council at the Center for Social and Economic Research (CASE) and George Logush, President of Kyiv School of Economics took part in the discussion.

In times of transition it’s important first to pinpoint the most serious problems the country is facing and determine the country’s destination, according to Prof. Balcerowicz. “Do not be discouraged that you have many problems. If you have many problems, you have many possibilities for improvement, with proper policies of course”, – Prof. Balcerowicz noted.  “You have to know where are you heading. The only rational choice is to head to the system which is capable of producing rapid, long-term economic growth”, – he said.

Prof. Balcerowicz also participated in a public discussion in Ukrainian Crisis Media Centre on communicating, coordinating and sequencing of reforms together with Roland Freudenstein, Deputy Director and Head of Research of Martens Centre, Aivaras Abromavicius, Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Dmytro Shymkiv, Deputy Head of Presidential Administration,Dmytro Sololgub, Deputy Governor of the National Bank, Viktoria Ptashnyk, member of Verkhovna Rada Committee on Economic Policy, Artem Myrgorodsky, Head of Secretariat of Reanimation Package of Reforms, Liubov Akulenko, Information Campaign Coordinator of Stronger Together and Pavlo Kukhta, expert on Index of Monitoring Reforms, member of VoxUkraine.George Logush President of KSE moderated the discussion.
