“Ukrainian situation demonstrates that partial reforms are even worse than no reforms at all”– Ivan Mikloš with the open lecture at KSE

Today Kyiv School of Economics was honored to host Ivan Miklos with the open lecture. Mr.Miklos shared Slovakian reform experience with KSE community and guests:

“In 1998 Slovakia was in a difficult situation. It suffered from huge corruption & inflation. It was isolated economically and politically. In 2000 Slovakia was 3 grades below Poland and 4 grades below Hungary.  As a result of reforms Slovakia entered EU and experienced the highest economic growth from all EU countries.

 

The main lessons from Slovakian reforms that can be used to Ukraine are:

  •        Reforms is not a technical problem. It’s a problem of political will. People are afraid of change. To do reforms in any country means power, vision, will and courage to do.

  •        Doing reforms doesn’t mean political suicide. For a political party it doesn’t mean not to be re-elected.

  •        Foreign advisers are useful. But your domestic reformers are more important.

  •        Partial reforms are worse than no reforms. The more radical, deeper, complex reforms are, the better.”
