Workshop «Analysis of data for decision making in the public sphere»

We invite students of 3rd and 4th courses of the faculties of political science, sociology and law to the workshop «Analysis of data for decision making in the public sphere»

Description

How to evaluate the impact of the new law? How to allocate resources properly? How to choose the best way to solve a problem with several alternative paths?

When making and analyzing public policy, such decisions should be taken on a permanent basis. This can (and should), rely not on intuition, advice or previous experience, but on the basis of data analysis. But we must remember that the data hides many problems. Incorrect understanding of the data may distort the results of the analysis.

At the workshop you will find out:

  • what mistakes are first and second kind of mistakes
  • how the indices are formed
  • how to make sure that the correlation has a causal relationship

We check the example of measuring political preferences among the population and politicians. This example will demonstrate questioning analysis, text analysis, index creation and multivariate data analysis.

The workshop will be run by Tymofii Brik: KSE professor, sociologist and economics historian. He received the Panini Prize as the «Best Young Sociologist of the Year» in 2018, has a Ph.D. degree in the field of social sciences (University of Madrid, Charles III, Spain). Studied and worked in the Netherlands, Spain and the USA. He is one of the leaders in the Network of Inequalities Researchers at the European Social Science History Conference.
